“Anyone familiar with the history of Northern New Mexico knows that acequias, acequia culture, and acequia governance are defining characteristics of our special and unique region. Community grew and thrived here for hundreds of years because of access to water via the acequia system. Designating the Las Comunidades del Valle de los Ranchos as a Traditional Historical Community (THC) is an appropriate recognition of the past and a means to advance the future we wish to realize. It seems fitting that the boundary of the El Valle de los Ranchos Water & Sanitation District - an authority established to safeguard our water supply — will also serve as boundary for Los Comunidades. Those who argue that only buildings and structures are worthy of protection miss the point entirely!”
